All Saints’ Day

Today is “All Saints’ Day”. After reading an article yesterday that I posted to Facebook (click here if you want to see the article), I became interested in seeing how I could introduce “All Saints’ Day” to Shaan. So, here’s what I came up with:

1) I am going to start off explaining what a saint is, according to the Bible.

1 Corinthians 1:2 – “To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours…”

Revelation 14:12 – “Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.”

In summary – saints are “Christians” – all those who have placed their faith in Jesus (sanctified by Christ, kept the commandments of God and faith in Jesus). So, I am going to tell Shaan that today is a day for celebration of all those who place their faith in Jesus Christ. We can talk about people who have helped us learn about Jesus – like his teachers at church, my parents, etc., and thank God for them.

2) Then, we are going to talk about the “blessings” Jesus gave to the saints (i.e. the Beatitudes).

Parents, there is a wonderful article for you to read about the saints and the Beatitudes here if you are also interested in doing an “All Saints’ Day” devotion. I recommend reading this as part of your personal devotion.

Next, there is a fantastic children’s devotion about the “Beatitudes” here that you can walk through with your chil(dren).

After discussing what a saint is (as defined by the Bible) and walking through the blessings Jesus gave to those called saints (from the Sermon on the Mount), we are going to:

3) Wrap up our devotion with a child-friendly version of “When the Saints Go Marching In”:

“Oh, when the saints go marching in

Oh, when the saints go marching in

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When the saints go marching in.

Oh, when the sun begins to shine

Oh, when the sun begins to shine

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When the sun begins to shine.

Oh, when they gather round the throne

Oh, when they gather round the throne

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When they gather round the throne.

Oh, when they crown him King of Kings

Oh, when they crown him King of Kings

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When they crown him King of Kings.

Oh, when the happy ages roll.

Oh, when the happy ages roll.

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When the happy ages roll.”

Maybe some of you might be interested in trying out this “All Saints’ Day” devotion as well. If you do, let me know how it goes!

Happy All Saints’ Day! God Bless!
